IR 1 (i) Codification system, general file and introduction 1946 to 1948 including correspondence on the awards given to Messrs T.K. Hogan and K.B. Petersson for system of patent search involving codification of inventions and the implementation of the Hollerith card sorting machine.

A set of procedures on early automation of patent searching using punch cards initially devised for other purposes.

See also records 203, 205, Cec Jeffery's material and records 43 and 116 for the photos of the award presentation. Also records 174 to 177.

This was a very early form of automation and shows how the examiners developed concepts to analyse and code inventions so the patents could be searched using machine methods. Some of the data in today's Patindex database was carried across from the punched card systems.
